The word chiropractic comes form a combination of the Greek words “chiro” and “praktikis”, meaning “done by hand.” Chiropractors provide specialized “hands-on” treatment of the spine, soft tissues and joints of the body.
The most common procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as an “adjustment” or “spinal manipulation.” The purpose of these adjustments is to restore mobility into joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their normal movement – as a result from tissue injury. Adjustments are made by manually applying a light, controlled force into the joints that have become hypomobile. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event such as a sports injury or from an accumulation of repetitive stresses such as sitting for hours with poor spinal posture. When these tissues undergo physical and chemical stressors they adapt by creating inflammation and pain in the body and can be felt as muscle tightness. Adjustments and soft tissue techniques can manage these issues by creating more motion in the joint and or muscle to alleviate pain and allow the tissues to heal.
Dr. Jasmine Jackson focuses her treatments by creating more motion in the joints and tissues of the body. She does this by first addressing any soft tissue injury in the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves in the body by using Active Release Technique (ART®)*. Then, if necessary she has a number of different techniques she may use to adjust the various joints of the body that are lacking motion. The adjustment techniques can vary depending on what the patient is comfortable with, as well as if the patient is pregnant or is a baby or child.
The Webster Technique
The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that works with the pelvis and surrounding soft tissue to create a state of balance. It was designed by Dr. Larry Webster as a safe means to asses SI joint dysfunction/sacral subluxation in any weight bearing individual. It has since evolved into an effective way of treatment for pregnant women. Dr. Webster reported that by restoring pelvic neuro-biomechanics with this technique, it facilitates optimal fetal positioning for babies in a breech position. Pelvic misalignment and the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments can lead to a mal-position of the baby. This technique combines specific adjustments to the sacrum, and soft tissue work on the surrounding soft tissue, including the round ligaments and psoas muscles, to create a state of balance in the pelvis. This new state of balance creates less torsion on the ligaments attaching to the uterus and thus provides the baby more room to move and get in an optimal position for birth.
Dr. Jasmine Jackson has been using this technique since she started practicing in 2008 and has been successful in “turning” breech, transverse lie, and posterior babies.
Active Release Technique® (ART)
ART® is a state-of-the art soft tissue movement based massage technique used to manage problems that arise in the muscles, tendons, fascia, ligaments, and nerves of the body. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of these structures. Abnormal tissues are then treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.
How do these overused muscles occur? Our muscles (and other soft tissues) can change in three ways. They can change from acute conditions including pulls, tears, collisions, etc. Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma), or from not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia). Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness. ART aims to locate this scar tissue and remove the adhesions so your muscles and nerves can move and work freely.
Kinesiotaping
Kinesio Taping® is used to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion.
The tape alleviates pain and facilitates lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. This lifting affect forms convolutions in the skin thus increasing interstitial space and allowing for a decrease in inflammation of the affected areas. Kinesio Tex Tape® can be applied in hundreds of ways and has the ability to reduce pain and inflammation, optimize performance, prevent injury, and promote good circulation and healing.
The tape can be used on people in all stages of life from pediatrics, prenatal, to the elderly. It lasts for an average of 2-5 days providing 24 hour support, and even stays on in the shower or pool.
